The Positive Course
for Family Transitions
You are probably doing a lot of planning for the wedding, assembling a team of experts to help and getting ready for your big day. Don’t stop with the caterer and photographer. Before you tie the knot, plan for the rest of your marriage as well. And don't forget to plan your prenuptial agreement. While many people think that prenups are unromantic and only for the wealthy, consider this:
Whether you know it or not, you already have a prenup. Your state's probate and divorce laws provide a one-size-fits-all agreement. You can accept that or be proactive and create a Collaborative Pre-Nup of your own. An agreement that you and your fiance create can reflect your circumstances, expectations and goals within the limits of the laws in your state and any religious constraints.
And, far from undermining trust in your relationship as a traditional prenup often does, the process of crafting a Collaborative Prenuptial Agreement, may in fact, strengthen it. The process requires a full disclosure of your financial situation and involves an open and honest discussion of how you will handle your money and plan your future together. It can be a complicated process, and you'll need help doing it effectively and positively. And I can help you.
After working with hundreds of couples, both in PreCana for the Chicago Archdiocese and as a divorce coach in private practice, I know how tricky it can be to talk about finances, children, businesses, religion, disability and death. As your Coach, I will guide through what can be difficult conversations so you can identify your core concerns and goals, establish a timeline for completing the prenup well before your wedding date, refer you to attorneys that are well-matched to your circumstances and manage the Collaborative Prenup process so that you can
craft an agreement that works for both of you.
The biggest hurdle often is raising the pre-nup subject. itself and concern over how to handle objections that your future spouse might voice. I've included some approaches on this website (click links above or the buttons on the right) to get you started.
